Glimpses of India

I met these young girls in the middle of the Thar Desert, near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India. They are part of a large family living in a small, isolated hut. We stopped and shared tea with the whole family, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. These smiling faces, sparkling eyes, and the palpable love among the family members greatly inspired me. My travels have taught me that one can live very simply and be happy. This family confirmed that for me.

This painting was created in oil. Initially, I started with a blue background, which is still slightly visible. I then worked on the background using a palette knife with yellow ochre and titanium white. The flags in the background reflect the yellow of the clothes and create a sense of perspective. In the desert, everything is yellow/ochre. The colors stand out particularly and capture the eye. In the heart of these vast spaces, humans seem even more alive and their gaze more penetrating. By diving into these gazes, we connect to our humanity.
