Christine Gouez-Manhes
born in 1975 in Brest (France), lives and works in Toulouse, South of France.
« I discovered painting by chance at the age of 18. Since then, it has become a vital necessity — a way to capture life, to hold onto fleeting moments, and to translate them through my own gaze, my sensitivity, and my personal touch.
I began with watercolor, painting the landscapes of my native Brittany. I soon realized that this land — its rocks, its light, its blend of harshness and softness — shaped the way I see the world. There I found the first echoes of what still guides my work today: the link between matter and humanity, between memory and the living world.
Alongside a career in an international environment, I continued to explore my artistic path, enriched by travel, encounters, and cultural diversity. My curiosity and my desire to refine my technique led me to study in various workshops, including at the Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, where I focused on documentary studies and trompe-l’œil painting. That technical foundation now allows me to embrace greater freedom in texture and emotion.
.
My portraits do not aim to represent, but to reveal. Through them, I seek to explore the intimate, the silent emotions, what lies behind the mask. The gaze becomes a passage — toward the other, but also toward oneself. These faces, whether of children or adults, carry within them our multiple identities, our fragility, our traces of life.
Painting, for me, means returning to my origins — to the earth, the mineral, the light, and their inner resonances. It is an exploration of the frontier between what is visible and what fades away, between what takes root and what transforms.
My recent works open more deeply onto nature, onto raw material and its metamorphoses. Through them, I question the fragility of life, the beauty of fractures, and the quiet energy that moves through the world. »
